Arrive Chicago, IL
Day 1 Arrive in Chicago and pick up your rental car at the airport, then transfer to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day exploring the many sights of the Windy City. Visit the Sears Tower, the John Hancock Center or the Amoko Building, some of the tallest buildings in the world with panoramic views of “Chi City” from their observation decks.
Chicago – Wisconsin Dells – La Cross, WI
Day 2 Leaving Chicago, head northwest and enter Wisconsin. Drive through the state capital of Madison on your way to the circus city of Baraboo. Continue to Wisconsin Dells, where boats and ducks will take visitors to the picturesque bluffs of the Upper and Lower Dells cut through by the Wisconsin River. Then continue on to La Crosse where the Black and La Crosse rivers meet. German and Norwegian immigrants, attracted by the extensive pine groves, settled the area and spread their culture throughout the city.
La Crosse – Winona – Red Wing – Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN.
Day 3 Today’s scenic route follows the Mississippi River, famous in American history for the novels of Mark Twain. Enjoy breathtaking views of Minnesota, where the river begins, from a cliff top near Winona, where a busy steamboat once docked in the 1800s. Make a stop in Wabash at the National Eagle Center and learn about the revival of the national symbol. Continue on the Great River Road north to Red Wing, a picturesque river town filled with Victorian architectural treasures. Proceed to the Minneapolis and Saint Paul metropolitan area.
Minneapolis/St. Paul
Day 4 Minneapolis, one of the Twin Cities, is home to America’s most famous retailers along the Nicolet Mall, a walkway. Summit Avenue, the longest avenue of Victorian houses in America, leads to St. Paul’s Cathedral and the majestic Capitol building. In Bloomington, the Mall of America® is the largest shopping and entertainment complex in the US under one roof. Enjoy savings with Minnesota’s duty-free clothing policy at over 500 stores. Minneapolis/St. Paul – Duluth, MN.
Day 5 Duluth is a mixture of quaint houses and steep hills with stunning views of Lake Superior and the world’s largest freshwater port. The historic depot and its museums remind visitors of the surge of European immigrants to the region in the 1800s. In the lakeside Canal Park, visitors are entertained by restaurants, nightclubs, shops, sightseeing cruises and excursions on ore boats. Return to Wisconsin to explore the coastal village of Bayfield and the pristine Apostle Islands. Cruise the islands aboard a sightseeing boat or take a short ferry ride to Madeleine Island for a tour of Big Bay State Park.
Duluth – Keweenaw Peninsula – Marquette, MI
Day 6 Depart Michigan and explore the scenic Keweenaw Peninsula. See historic Fort Wilkins and visit a Delaware copper mine before heading to the L’Anse Indian Reservation in Marquette.
Marquette – Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore St. Ignace, MI.
Day 7. Follow the scenic State Route 28 to Munising. Cruise boats pass by the Pictured Rocks, sung by Longfellow in “The Song of Hiawatha’s GREAT LAKES”. This stunning area is revered as the nucleus of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Continue past the two amazing Tahkuamenon Falls to St. Ignace.
St. Ignace – Mackinac Island – St. Ignace
Day 8. Take the ferry to Mackinac’s timeless resort island, where cars are banned and bicycles and horse-drawn carts rule the roads. Visit Fort Mackinac, perched on a bluff overlooking the harbor, and enjoy the view from the magnificent veranda of the elegant old grand hotel.
Return to St. Ignace in the late afternoon.
St. Ignace – Colonial Fort Michilimackinac – Traverse City, MI
Day 9. Cross the impressive Straits Bridge and visit the colonial Fort Michilimackinac. Then, travel to one of the largest cherry growing regions in the world and see some of the largest sand dunes along the picturesque Pier-Stoking road. Overnight in the resort town of Traverse City.
Traverse City – Ann Arbor – Detroit, MI.
Day 10 Drive through Michigan to the university city of Ann Arbor and on to Dearborn, where you can visit the Henry Ford Museum. Arriving in Detroit, the national center of the automotive industry, where the city’s civic center and resurgent downtown rise along the river.
Detroit – Niagara Falls, ON. Canada
Day 11 Cross Canada and drive through the province of Ontario to one of America’s greatest natural wonders, Niagara Falls.

Day 14 Enter Buckeye State and discover the “New American City” of Cleveland, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Cleveland – Sandusky – Indiana Amish Country
Day 15 Today, continue on Scenic Route 6 along Lake Erie past Vermilion to Sandusky, then enter Indiana. Discover the colorful and historic upstate of this state, home to the third largest Amish community in the country, and get a glimpse into the daily lives of this unusual cultural group. Overnight in Nappany, in the heart of Indiana’s Amish country.
